Seriously, why wouldn't this work? Have it hosted by Mets fan Jon Stewart, air it on MLB Network and give me something to watch in November. MLB has really the only sports individual awards anyone cares about aside from the Heisman and they have an ENTIRE HOUR dedicated to ONE award for the Heisman. MLB totally botches how they announce their awards.
an awards show would be kind of cool as long as Fox isn't involved in it.
MLB needs to do an award show, like the NHL does (don't they have one?). Give MVP, ROY, Manager of the Year, this thing, Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, Hank Aaron Award, Minor League Player of the Year, the Lady Byng Award. You could create a few more like the Rickey! Award for best base-stealer, the Derek Jeter Award for "best clutch hitter", the Jeff Francoeur Award for "most likeable teammate." Players come in tuxes (would be great to see who wears the most outlandish outfit. Maybe we invite Jonny Gomes and Brian Wilson just to fill seats)
Mutter. Grumble. Geezer that I am, I think that at least one of those awards should be named for Hoyt Wilhelm, who is the greatest reliever of all time. But, then, Hoyt wasn't a closer, so his save stats don't look like much. His career numbers as a pitcher, on the other hand.... - Brock Hanke
They do an awards show on MLB network. I imagine it would be difficult to get most guys to give up their golf schedule/family time to go to an event.

Much as I loved hearing "Hell's Bells" (particularly in 1998, when the Padres first started regularly doing that upon Trevor's entrances) and watching Trevor Time for many years, Hoffy's overrated as a closer. I know that. He was very good but I wouldn't call him great.
