Every day I drive past Golden Gate Fields, a racetrack just north of Berkeley right on the bay. It was built facing inland, which means that it has a great view of the I-80 highway. Had they flipped it around, it would have the most marvelous view of the Bay: both bridges, Alcatraz, the skyline, the Marin headlands, everything. This must be the greatest architectural mistake of all time. It's only frequented by delinquent gamblers and drinkers, except on Sundays during football season, when it fills up with casual gamblers and drinkers. Yes, they come to the horse track to watch football on tv indoors. With the view if might be one of the most beloved sporting arenas in the state and on every tourist's shortlist.
Twins sportswriters called it "the diaper"
