My guess is that the next commissioner is going to be younger than 70 years old.
Roger Goodell is the model. A generic corporate guy with good hair. Occasionally causes controversy with his inability to make decisions or impersonate a human being, but public disdain for him never reaches the level of true loathing.
The only problem with Alderson is that he's nearly 70 and might not be interested in doing a job like that for very long.
Maybe someone like Terry Ryan... my guess is it will be someone who is not an owner, but has held (or is holding) something like a Team President position for a small-to-mid-market team.
What I expect is that the next Commish is going to look at the NBA/NHL/NFL and say "dammit, we need a hard cap" and we'll have a work stoppage.
For all of Selig's flaws I want someone who is able to keep the MLBPA/Owners working together. What I expect is that the next Commish is going to look at the NBA/NHL/NFL and say "dammit, we need a hard cap" and we'll have a work stoppage.

Andy MacPhail has the pedigree, the connections and the experience. He just turned 60. They could do a lot worse.
The relationship between the union and the owners seems to be quite good right now.
