I love how Levine is forced to dredge up ancient history for his comeback.
“But I can understand why, because under his and Bobby Valentine’s plan two years ago, the Red Sox were in last place.”
Yankees get Barbara Bush. Red Sox get Barbara Walters.
This is pretty much the weakest retort ever when the plan ONE year ago led to a World Series victory.
There's reason to say that Lucchino drove the Valentine decision. But there is no reason to say that he didn't equally drive hiring Theo, promoting Cherington, and all of the other key things that drove three titles. Just because he's an ass (and EVERYTHING suggests that he is) doesn't mean he's not good at his job.
It's funny, the narratives that "Theo/Cherington good, Lucchino bad" and "Cashman good/Levine-Steinbrenner bad" have survived all factual evidence that suggests it is not true, and people keep repeating them anyway.
