I may be oversimplifying this, but I'm pretty sure - for position players - it's about fielding and hitting. Mike Trout plays center field and so does Adam Jones. AJ won the Gold Glove AND the Silver Slugger. So, that would make him the best CF in the AL this past year. No way Trout should be MVP.
I know he's not nearly as talented as Cano, but I think I'd rather Pedroia.
Please explain what you mean by "talent". Because to these eyes, Pedroia is specially talented.
Well, that is actually pretty weird. Of course, Trout won the Silver Slugger too, and neither one of them did well on fielding metrics, so the savage irony of this comment may fade a little upon examination :)
Well, Cano can get his helmet from the top shelf of his locker without having to stand on an orange crate.
Cano is a better player,
Yes, but do you think Pedroia will continue to be the better player going forward?
You have to believe that Pedroia's glove more than makes up for Cano's advantages at the plate, and I'm skeptical.
Cano has been more durable in his career.
Well, yeah, the glove is better. And the baserunning is better. And the intangibles are better. And OPS+ is biased against players who are OBP heavy. I'll take the fewer strikeouts and the more walks over the power difference.
?? Pedroia has had 1 year where he missed significant time due to injury. 1 crummy year.
Pedroia is kind of injury prone in the sense that he has played through injuries a lot and it has resulted in reduced performance. His thumb has been a particular issue.
