Does he lead the pack for a fake award named after a fake baseball player?
I would bet infinity dollars that if the vote were held today, Scherzer wins.
Honestly, I think wins ARE dying. For example, while I knew that Scherzer was having a rather extreme year in the Win Points category, I honestly had no idea it was THIS extreme. Even five years ago could we have had a guy who was 17-1 and not have it be THE major pitching story of the year? As it is, people are certainly talking about it as his Cy Young to lose. But the commentary isn't breathless in the way I would have expected.
I suppose the argument for someone else is that Hernandez is pitching in front of a better defense than that someone else.
These aren't Ichiro's Mariners. If Felix gives up a flyball to a corner then he has to hope either Raul Ibanez or Mike Morse can catch it. And they finally had enough of Brendan Ryan's bat so his glove isn't out there much anymore.
The fences have moved in so there isn't quite the need for three Franklin Gutierrezes out there... but yes.
