The Rays are flying under the RADAR??
And remember that WAR is a counting statistic. You get credit for being on the field and Longoria leads the pack despite playing in just 771 games compared to Cabrera’s 920. Among players who qualify since the start of 2008, only Mike Trout has a higher WAR per 162 games.
Underrated - if you ask 1000 people who have attended a > a few games, watched plenty of TV, and follow the papers/net, who the best 10 players in MLB have beenthe past 6 years, how many would include Longoria on their list? I bet less than one third. So, yes, by my home-made but IMHO very reasonable definition, Evan is greatly underrated.
When does Josh Donaldson get his article?
I probably would name him pretty fast in my offhand list,
(though I think Ben Zobrist is peachy).
As for the casual fan -- Longoria...has no season of more than 33 home runs; is not a prolific base stealer; has never finished as high as 5th in MVP voting; and has a lot of his value in walks. I would be shocked if you asked a casual fan for the top MLB players, and his name came up.

Even in his own division he's getting eclipsed by Machado despite being a much better offensive player at this point. You have to really believe that Machado is actually saving his team 30+ runs in a season at 3B to not see Longoria as the clearly superior player this seaso
A lot of how you value Longoria, of course, depends on how accurate you think the defensive component of WAR is -- which is already raging on another thread.
He's married to a Playmate, so life can't be all that rough.
