Probably just the afterglow of 9 points from 3 games but I wonder if June, 2013 is a turning point for the program. Not just the wins but how we did it; Altidore scoring in 4 straight and generally playing very well even when not scoring. Bradley further entrenching himself in the middle. Besler and Gonzalez, despite the occassional hiccup, generally setting themselves up as a long term answer at central defense. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like experience will take away some of the mistakes. And of course doing it all without Donovan is a real shift to a "new guard". At worst Landon doesn't return and we know we can play without him. At best he does and we've seen some solid depth established behind him.
The thing I see with Besler and Gonzalez (especially Omar) is guys who generally play very well but then make terrible mistakes. I would equate it to a young pitcher who doesn't yet know how to succeed without his best stuff. As experience comes they can learn how to deal with those situations.
Gattuso named manager of newly relegated Palermo. I bet he will last fewer weeks than I can stuff jellybeans in my mouth.
I am a little concerned about right back. IMO Evans did not look too good against either Panama or Honduras. There's always Cherundolo but he's getting injured more and more frequently & he still has to play another Bundesliga season before Brazil. Cameron should probably be the team's first option at RB but I'm willing to give Evans 2013 to prove himself.
Another lackluster win against a middling and depleted CONCACAF team
Did NBC's purchase include the streaming rights to the games?
I've liked Beasley at left back also but I wouldn't be surprised if 12 months from now Fabian is the clear choice.
The Brazil-Mexico game is entertainingly wide open, and should stay that way since Neymar scored very early. And so far twice I have rolled my eyes at Brazil players for rollng around after contact, and twice the replay showed that they were legitimately in pain.
I was so bold as to construct Kinnear's potential formation for Newcastle. This is not factoring in any future signings, of course.
You're a cricket buff: by what score will England win the Ashes series? I think probably one draw and three wins. I think the Aussies might win a Test.
Will you be going to any of them? I'd like to think so, but it's difficult. Unless I get posh seats it's difficult going with Joe Public because I get pestered – they either don't like me or they love me! I'm like Marmite; love him or loathe him! It's difficult going to cricket matches. I went to The Oval with mates one night and it was okay until the rain came down. Everyone's drinking lagers except me, because I don't drink lager and all of a sudden there's 10 West Ham fans, there's 10 bloody Millwall fans, there's 10 Arsenal fans and you're in the middle of it. It does get a little bit nervewracking and hair-raising.
There's a quote on the cover from Harry Redknapp saying "this book tells you what managing is really like". Can you categorically confirm that Harry has read all 354 pages? I spoke to him about a few of the chapters and I know he's read some, but I won't tell you which ones.
Mata - Torres - Villa
So I had never heard of this Kinnear guy until someone posted about him here. Can someone explain to me what his deal is?
Poor PSG. No one seems to want their beautiful piles of money. Ahhhhh.
I'd like to see Spain try for a 1-0, 99.9% possession victory. Figure Tahiti has to control the ball after kickoff at the start of a half and after the goal but once Spain get it back they should just try to keep control for 45 minutes.
Edit: substituted. Devastating.
Mikel?! I wonder what odds you could have got on him scoring.
Well, they have Mata, Oscar, Hazard and Lampard, but they've got no one to play a deeper midfield position. I don't think you can reasonably drop the three wonder-minis for Mikel, and with his power Mikel is at least a capable deeper-lying contributor.
If you want to argue that Roman has signed too many of the same player and not put enough time or money into building a fully rounded squad, that's not crazy.
Love Darke, but that man gossips like one of my Aunts. Hi pre-game routine obviously includes an exhaustive analytical study through the Daily Mail's transfer rumor section. NTTAWWT
So, nerd news. I did a thing. I spidered the game log data off WhoScored for the 2012-2013 season. I parsed it and built a set of spreadsheets with time-stamped event data. If anyone would be interested, I'm very happy to share--just email me through the site and I can send you a copy. (About 15 MB).
I'll have a set of posts with analysis using this data going up at Cartilage Free Captain over the next few weeks.
Some protesters have denounced the billions of public dollars spent on stadiums in advance of the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The government is projecting that $13.3 billion will be spent on stadiums, airport renovations and other projects for the World Cup, with an estimated $3.5 billion on venues.
"We want hospitals and schools in FIFA standards," read one banner outside the Maracana Stadium in Rio on Thursday ahead of Spain's match against Tahiti.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter has urged protesters not to "use football to make their demands heard."
Does recent US sport have an equivalent?
Horrorshow defending on the last goal, but isn't the US playing their 3rd string centerbacks?
